The Takayama Castle Battle Festival started in 2012 to create various re-enactments of important battles that took place in the city of Toki, Gifu prefecture, during the Sengoku period, all set among the Takayama castle ruins and area.
The Sengoku period 戦国時代 from 1467 – 1573 was a period in Japanese history marked by social upheaval, political intrigue and near-constant military conflict that it was also known as the Warring States period which came to an end when all political power was unified under the Tokugawa shogunate. Gifu Prefecture played an important role because of its location in the middle of the country and during the Sengoku period, various warlords, including Oda Nobunaga, used the area as a base in an attempt to unify and control Japan.
Construction of Takayama Castle was started by Nagachika and by 1600, the main and secondary castle keeps were completed, followed by the third keep a few years later and a castle town developed as well during the construction period. The remains of the castle are in the present-day Shiroyama Park.
The colourful festivities at Takayama Castle Battle Festival include parades and re-enactments of battles by warriors in period costume. As well there are various performances, demonstrations of old-style matchlock guns, and of course food and drink stands aplenty.
Admission is free, please enjoy this historic festival!
