Kappabashi’s Dougu Matsuri is an annual kitchen tools festival held in the shopping mecca of wholesale restaurant tools and kitchen supplies which is open to the public. The festival will feature a variety of attractions, including a memorial service for tools, a lottery with a grand prize being 10 million yen, a tool market and shops offering discounts and services as well as plenty of entertainment.
There will be parades, taiko drummers, an elementary school brass band, cheerleaders, singers and lots more.
Kappabashi 合羽橋 or Kitchen Town, is located in Tokyo’s Taito City, along the west side of Asakusa’s main entertainment district, and just midway between Ueno and Asakusa.
Merchants first began gathering in the Kappabashi area around 1912, selling old tools and a wide range of implements and hardware. Today, one can find almost every kind of restaurant equipment imaginable. These shops sell everything from knives and other kitchen utensils, mass-produced crockery, restaurant furniture, ovens and decorations, through to esoteric items such as the plastic display food (sampuru, derived from English sample) found outside Japanese restaurants.
